USC...multimedia across the curriculum

I also want to relay some information that was presented at the NMC summer conference “Five Minutes of Fame” conclusion. I thought it was interesting…

It was called “MULTIMEDIA AGAINST ALL ODDS.”
University of Southern California’s Provost “mandated” multimedia across the USC curriculum to prepare students for the 21st century.
They explained how the USC’s Multimedia in the CORE program took shape. They described what worked, what didn’t, and how they are now expanding beyond belief. It is an interdisciplinary approach that unites Gen Ed courses with multimedia labs. etc.

Video Mash-ups

I attended the New Media Consortium Conference in Princeton NJ last week! It was a great conference that brought to light many exciting ways to energize and engage students in the classroom. One of the presentations got my undivided attention because I have been experimenting with using student created videos in my classes this past semester to meet some learning objectives. The U of P presented a showcase of digital media success stories based on this premise: “ Student-created video and multimedia is an increasingly popular undergraduate assignment option at Penn, replacing traditional research papers. Creative videos assignments engage students in high level critical thinking, writing, planning, scripting and group collaboration tasks.” (WIC at U of P )

By the way, video assignments are being applied to a wide variety of disciplines and classes. Only some of the assignments given required the student to make a Video Mashup : http://wic.library.upenn.edu/multimedia/tutorials/mashup.html
Finally….and this is getting a little too texty,if you have an interest, I have some great examples of video projects assigned by instructors in a variety of disciplines that met the required learning outcomes. What do you think about video projects? Worried about copy right issues??
